Samuel Adams Double Bock

I often wonder if the brewers at Samuel Adams beer have become detached from their craft beer roots.  Is it possible to maintain craft beer quality when you've grown to brew such a huge volume of beer? Double Bock was a pleasant surprise.

A Firkin of Jalapeño Pils

The casked jalapeño pils was light, wonderful, and perfectly spicy.  What a fantastic beer!  I could drink it all day and all night long.

American Beer Classic Chicago, The good the bad and the ugly

This weekend I was able to attend the American Beer Classic at Soldier Field In Chicago. I was pouring for Potosi Brewing , the weather was much better than expected and I was excited to be there! We counted almost 100 breweries in attendance. A lot of the big boys were there: Goose Island, Sam Adams, Lagunitas, Stone and Dogfish. Wisconsin was well represented by: Potosi, Sprecher, Lake Front, Milwaukee Brewing Company and Central Waters. There were many local start-ups also, All Syndicate,…

Beer off-flavors 101: The dreaded skunk

UV contamination can happen during any step in the brewery to drinker chain. If you’re at a grocery or liquor store and see green or clear bottles unprotected under florescent lighting then take your business elsewhere. If your buddy pulls up with a bunch of clear bottles in his sunny backseat…well maybe it just wasn’t a bad batch. A good example to try at home is to pour an IPA or any light-hued, hop forward elixir in a clear pint glass on a sunny day then go out on the patio for a few…

Boulder Beer Buffalo Gold

I received this bottle as a gift.  I don't know if it's a beer I would have selected for myself.  That is, if I saw it on the shelf at my beer store, I wouldn't have picked it up on impulse.  But after trying it, I would definitely grab a bottle or two of Buffalo Gold. It's a surprisingly tasty beer!

New Albion Ale

The New Albion Brewing Company was founded in 1976 and was arguably THE  microbrewery that spurred the ever growing craft beer movement.  In it's heyday New Albion brewed 7.5 barrels of beer per week that sold every single bottle to a ravenous beer loving public at an alarming rate.  Unfortunately, they were never able to brew enough beer to make a…

Peeper Ale

Maine Beer Company is a small brewery located in Freeport, Maine.  Most of their beers are meant to be consumed as fresh as possible.  Each bottle is date stamped and meant to be consumed within 90 days of bottling. Who am I to argue?  If Maine Beer Company wants us to drink their beer fresh then that is what we should endeavor to do.

Lunch, it's what's for beer!

Lunch (7%) is an IPA brewed by Maine Beer Company.  It is described as "“East Coast” version of a West Coast-style IPA".   I'm not sure exactly what that means.  I wouldn't compare this in anyway to the BIG west…

No-knead Crusty Beer Bread

This is a beerific spin on my favorite bread recipe. This bread is super easy to make, almost no work at all, you just need to plan a day ahead to get it started before you bake it; about 1½ hours plus 14 to 20 hours for rising

The bread comes out super crusty on the outside and moist in side. Perfect for serving with something saucy to sop up…
