Great Lake's Brewing's Conway's Irish Ale

hey say on St. Patrick's Day that everyone is Irish.  Well, 365 days a year I'm always Irish.  My maternal grandmother, who was also named Marie (which I'm sure is just a coincidence), came over from County Mayo when she was just 16 years old.   She left her family's small farm in the West of Ireland and sailed across the sea to a new country to join her older sisters in the quest for a better life. When I was 16, my…

Great Lakes Brewery's Edmund Fitzgerald

On November 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald, a great freighter carrying a load of ore pellets, was bound for an island near Detroit.    At 7:10 PM, the captain responded to a well being call with a reassuring "We're holding our own."  Ten minutes later, they could not be reached by radio nor could they be detected on radar.  The entire crew of 29 sailors were lost when the ship went down in a massive November gale. The Edmund Fitzgerald is arguably one of the most famous of…

Thimble Islands Brewery

Just a short detour off the beaten track in Branford, CT is a pint-sized brewery with kegs of potential - Thimble Islands Brewery.

I dropped by the other day and the place was packed with people. By packed I mean that the tasting area had about a half dozen folks hanging out sampling beer and there wasn't a whole heck of a lot of…

Best Beers of 2010

It’s that time of year, the end.  End of the year that is, not this article.  Please do, read on.

During 2010, we’ve witnessed another year of amazing beers from new and older craft brewery’s alike. Rough job, but someone has to do it.  Each one of these deserves a place in your fridge.

Started in 2007,…

The Wet Dream

I recently had a glorious, hedonistic evening, with several free flights and full pints of various Belgium style and wonderful American craft beers, some that hadn’t even been released yet. Alongside, was food pairings consisting of Santa Barbara sea urchin, duck breast w/ akane apple, chanterelles and bacon, foie gras ravioli, strips of double cut New York Strip and cheeses like the Smokey Blue and Rogue Chocolate Stout Cheddar from Rogue Creamery. And it was free.

We were then… Continue
